Silent Shark Angle on Bow (AoB) Explained
The TDC input that confuses new skippers most — and how to measure it the same way every time.
Steam discussions show the same Silent Shark question again and again: in the Basic Tutorial, angle-on-bow (AoB) feels drawn one way; in the Advanced Tutorial, the geometry seems reversed. Players wonder which method is “correct.” This guide settles the confusion and gives you a single, repeatable AoB habit that feeds a trustworthy TDC solution.
Silent Shark is still a single-player chart sim. Nobody else will eyeball the bow for you. AoB errors of twenty degrees can send a perfect-looking torpedo into empty water even when range and speed look fine.
What AoB actually means
Angle on bow is the angle between the target ship’s heading (its bow direction) and the line of sight from the target back toward your submarine. Imagine standing on the merchant’s bridge looking toward your periscope feather: how many degrees left or right of their bow are you?
- 0° AoB — you are nearly dead ahead of the target.
- 90° AoB — you sit on the beam (broadside geometry — often ideal for a first hit).
- 180° AoB — you are nearly astern.
AoB is always measured from the target’s bow, not from your own heading. That single sentence prevents most tutorial confusion.
Why Basic and Advanced tutorials feel different
Both tutorials are teaching the same physical angle. They may walk you through the chart construction in opposite drawing orders — submarine → ship → heading versus heading → ship → submarine — but the finished triangle should describe the same relationship: your bearing relative to the target’s bow.
If the on-screen coach text feels flipped, trust this checklist:
- Plot the target track (course line through the ship).
- Draw the line of sight between your boat and the target.
- Read the angle at the target between its bow (along the track) and the line of sight.
- Enter that left/right degree value into the TDC.

Visual estimation through the periscope
When you lack time for a full chart triangle, estimate AoB from the periscope or binocular silhouette:
- Full length silhouette with stack centered → near 90°.
- Strong foreshortening with bow facing you → low AoB.
- Stern-heavy silhouette → high AoB toward 180°.

Feeding AoB into the TDC
AoB is one of four core TDC fields with bearing, range, and speed. Update them as a set after each meaningful observation. The Position Keeper will drift if you change course while leaving an old AoB frozen — especially on zigging escorts or turning merchants.
Common miss signature: torpedo runs beautifully parallel to the target track but forever behind or ahead. That often means speed error or AoB error. Re-estimate AoB after any target zig before you flood another tube.
Practice drill (demo)
- Load a clear-weather single-ship encounter.
- Freeze after first periscope ID and write your AoB guess on paper.
- Build the chart triangle and compare.
- Fire only after the paper and chart agree within about ten degrees.
- Repeat until the visual guess lands close without the chart.
Then rerun under rain or night using Stadimeter Range so range and AoB improve together.
